Stromae - Tous Les Mêmes

  • GENRE: Hip-Hop/Rap/Electronic
  • ORIGIN: Belgium
CLOSE
In the clip, Stromae plays both the man and woman in a comically toxic relationship by creating a visual illusion with half his face done up in makeup and the other plainly masculine. “It’s my job to be ridiculous,” he says of his provocative visuals. For as long as Stromae can remember, he’s always composed music in-character, telling stories about extreme human behavior through the multiple personalities he incarnates in his videos. Stromae announced his retirement from the music scene in 2018. In an interview, he said his focus will fully be directed to fashion instead. His already existing record label, Mosaert, also has a fashion division and this is what he would like to extend in collaboration with his wife.

Frank Ocean - Chanel

  • GENRE: R&B
  • ORIGIN: USA
CLOSE
A song that does deserve attention, though — something that feels entirely more important than “more chune for your head top” — is Frank Ocean’s new “Chanel.” The boastful first few bars of Ocean’s new song might be the coldest, gayest, and most securely masculine flex in the history of rap. Elegant and mellow, the song’s lyrics read as a deliberate ode to duality and non-heteronormative binaries — an ambition, that since the death of Prince Rogers Nelson, is sorely missed in black music.

Feng Suave - Feng Suave EP (2017)

  • GENRE: JAZZ & SOUL
  • ORIGIN: NETHERLANDS
CLOSE
Amsterdam-based psych pop meets soul outfit Feng Suave consists of Daniel De Jong and Daniel Leonard Elvis. Together they make music reminiscent of bygone times when vocals were drowned in reverb and instruments were seemingly recorded under water. The soulful vocal melodies, alluding to the 60s and 70s, and punchy bass lines make for a warm, psychedelic deluge of airwaves embellished with dreamy effects. Sometimes Feng Suave sounds more like an audacious attempt to communicate with extraterrestrial intelligence than two boys playing pop songs.
